Coastal Influence

Farm Entrance at Aliso Beach, South Laguna

Mark Kerckhoff, “Farm Entrance at Aliso Beach, South Laguna,” oil, 16×20 in.

June 14 – July 21, 2013

Marcia Burtt Studio presents “Coastal Influence,” a group exhibition featuring gallery artists.
Foggy mornings, June gloom, haze over the channel, coastal cliffs, palm and eucalyptus trees, sailboats beyond the breakers, and heat radiating off the sand are as much a part of our California summers as rocks, seaweed, and incoming waves.

California landscape painter Arturo Tello was born on December 5, 1954 in Tulancingo Hidalgo, a town near Mexico City. He began his formal training as a figure painter, but his innate feeling for the land drew him inexorably toward depicting the shifting light and natural forms of his adopted country’s coastline and bluffs. His strong belief in the importance of preserving open spaces led him to help to form the Oak Group.  Affiliated around the venerable Ray Strong, this group of landscape painting friends, works to celebrate and preserve the natural environment through their paintings.  A founding member of the Oak Group, he is represented by the Easton Gallery in Montecito and John Pence Gallery in San Francisco, CA.

Award winning artist, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, was trained at Arizona State University and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.  Peggi worked as a fashion and advertising illustrator before making the transition into fine art.  Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she moved into fine art with a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves a lot with a few very energetic brush strokes.  Inspired by her children she paints beach scenes and other aspects of their lives. Peggi is a member of the California Art Club, American Impressionist Society and Signature Member of Laguna Plein Aire Painters.  She is represented by Medicine Man Galleries in Tucson AZ and Santa Fe NM, JH Muse Gallery in Jackson Hole WY, Art Advisory Group in New York, Red Piano Gallery in Hilton Head NC, Thomas Reynolds Gallery in San Francisco, CA and Great Lakes Gallery in Angeles Camp CA.

California has always been a mythic land of sunshine that stirred my imagination. A fortunate set of influences helped me arrive at my own style of interpreting the California Landscape. I was probably permanently warped by doing paint by numbers as a child. I fell hard for the work of Redmond and Wendt. Their work helped me to see the landscape as shapes. It is easier for me to control hard edges with watercolor while painting outdoors. These factors led me to develop a style that simplifies what I see and organizes it into shimmering patches of color.

Mark Kerckhoff paints nature and creates beauty.  His art, highly regarded in southern California for nearly thirty years, is at once inspired and inspirational.  The time he spends out doors is transferred from his eye, to his heart, to hand, to brush, to canvas; then conveyed to the eye of the beholder… and to their heart.  Incredibly, through the use of color, light, composition, and depth, Mark’s paintings carry the viewer to the time and place of the piece, or even to a different time and place that only the viewer can know.  Like the scenes depicted, Mark’s paintings are fresh and new at each encounter; the kind of art you can live with and relate with every day, definitely not static, very much alive.   Mark is represented by the Casa de Paz, Tree of life gallery in San Juan Capistrano, CA and Daryl Millard Gallery in Solana Beach, CA.
